Reflections on the first year of marriage (or perhaps some warrented advise)
From Amanda and Dan to those who will eventually face "the first year"
Invest in a king size bed when at all possible. QUeen size beds incur an arguement an evening over who has more bed and who stole the blanket.
Your first experience sexually is enough to put you off having babies for a lifetime. If it hurts that much going in, how much will a 8 pound baby hurt coming out?!?!
When one person has a bad night sleep, consequentally, you BOTH have a bad night sleep.
Showers for two are not all that HOllywood makes them out to be. THere is NOT room for two to fit comfortably.
Encouraging friends to call before they come may prevent embarrassing visits and awkward moments for the friend (Eh Mary ann??)
Answering the door in a towel will automatically lead your friends to believe that they interrupted you in the middle of a very personal moment. (again....mary ann??!!)
Even if you are on the pill, invest in a back up plan. You never know when a puking incident may occur and consequently a possible pregnancy.(yah, for a negative test result!)
How warm one partner is, is inversally proportionate to how cold the other one is. (ie: one's boiling and one is freezing.)
The first month after you are married, all these random people (who you don;t care to see) decided they want to visit you. And all your friends (and those whom you wish to see) don't visit.
LEsson for males: What's yours is hers and what's hers is hers. (especially with chocolate)
Lessons for females: your boobs can get you anything...or get you out of anything (thanks karen for that one!!!!) If you want popcorn and your spouse won't get it, one little flash and it all changes!
Once you are married there are no boundaries. People decide that you get the privelge of knowing every detail about thier sexual lives. And yes, even in church this will happen. Or should i say, especially in church.
Marriage isn't always hard. LIfe is what is hard and thus it affects your relationship and subsequently your marriage. Deal with the stresses of life, and your marriage is protected.
Grandparents are a wonderful source for marital advice. They have been there, done that, got the bumper sticker and are going for round two.
People change the question from, "when are you getting married" to "When are you having babies?" IT never stops!
Be prepared to answer, "How's married life?"YOu will get asked this many times. The best responce to them: "Its great. How's single life?" (they get the picture)
HOneymoon's aren't just for sex. NO matter what you think or what other people think. HOneymoon are for relaxing and having fun. Plan activities. No one can realistically have sex for a week straight.
Go slow the first time. And if you think you are going slow enough, you're not! Her face with tell you how much fuin she's really having.
Her first thought after having sex for the first time will probably not be how wonderful that just was, but more along the lines of, "We have to do that again???? OUCH!" A youth workers brain will wonder to "why do youth even do this? and why do they do it again and again! They've got to be kidding themselves."
DOn't worry....it does get better. Much better. It just takes time. Be patient.
Invest in your hobbies. You need time to be creative seperately and spend time apart. It only draws you closer later.
Guys, overcome your fear of feminine hygiene products. You will be asked to go buy them on your own. After all, don't girls have to get over how unpleasing your special area is to the eye???
Men can do laundry. They can do dishes. They can clean the house. They can cook dinner. They just don't like to. BUt they can. A little hint to the males....its a huge turn on to have a clean house etc. for your wife. She'll love you!
Say i love you every day. You can never hear it enough.
Learn different ways to express your love for one another. send flowers, write notes. Use different words. WE all need to hear that we are loved for who we are!
This is not exhaustive by any means. But these are just a few things we have learned along the way. We hope its helpful!
