Torso-boy and the result of sin

"If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away...And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away." Matt. 5:29-30

It has been said that if we take this verse litrally, we would be walking around headless, eyesless and armless. Torso boy! But in essence, if we were to follow this verse literally, we would all be dead. No part of our body is exempt from sin. Perhaps those literalists have it right though. Not with the cutting off of various body parts, but with the result of cutting off those parts. We would be dead. Perhaps that is what Jesus is getting at. Become dead to our sins and alive in Christ. Perhaps we ought to take this verse a little more literally. We need to cut out the sin in our lives. If our eyes cause us to look at things that we shouldn't, we need to cut out looking at those things. If our arms and hands are doing or touching things that they shouldn't, we need to stop doing those things. We need to walk around like we don't have our arms and hands and then we wouldn't be doing the things we know we shouldn't be doing. We need to become proactive in becoming dead to sin--we need to avoid it all costs. Instead of how far can i go before its sin, we need to outright run in the opposite direction. I think this is what Jesus is getting at. No longer are our sinful bodies capable of sin, but they have become a new creation in Christ. The old has gone and the new has come!

Thank you Amanda:)
This has encouraged me, helped me to look at this verse in a new way. It's one of those things that has been on my mind and I needed someone to just put the truth out in words. So thank you!
Hope you had a blessed Christmas and New Years!
